Replacement Window Buying Guide

Beautiful windows enhance the appearance as well as value of your home. They also provide comfort and security while decreasing your energy bills. If you are considering replacing your home’s windows, it is important to take several factors into consideration before making your final choice.
Double-hung windows have operable (can open) upper and lower sashes (sheets of framed glass.) Many of these windows have sashes that tilt inward for easy cleaning, a valuable trait for second story windows. Single-hung windows look similar to double-hung models, but only the lower sash is operable. Some single-hung models also allow you to tilt the sash inward. Sliding windows have one or more horizontally moving panels that move along upper and lower tracks.
Some windows feature two (double-pane) or three (triple-pane) layers of glass with air or argon gas sealed between the panes as an insulator. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass has a coating that allows in light but blocks heat and ultraviolet (UV) light. This coating can help keep your home cool in the summer and prevent heat from escaping through the glass in the winter. It also protects carpets, upholstery, and furniture from fading. Tempered glass is a type of safety glazing that allows the glass to crumble when broken rather than shatter.
Energy Efficiency
Two energy efficiency factors you need to consider are the U-Value and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The U-Value (or U-Factor) measures overall energy efficiency and indicates the rate at which heat flows through the window and frame. Look for a lower U-value, which means higher insulation. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) indicates how much solar energy passes through the window. Again, look for a low number.
Personal Preference
Consider your home’s style. Do you want your windows to be decorative focal points or will they serve a purely practical purpose? Also consider ventilation, maintenance, privacy, and security. Vinyl replacement windows are extremely popular these days mainly due to how low maintenance and cost effective these windows are. They look very nice as well. Wood windows are preferable to some homeowners due to their high quality and natural look and feel. Others like PVC windows as they are designed to last for a very long time. With many options available, be sure to have your priorities top of mind so you are able to choose what’s going to work best for you and your family.
